Lactobacillus reuteri
L. reuteri is the most researched oral probiotic. A 2024 review of 11 trials in adults with gum disease found that L. reuteri lozenges, used alongside professional deep cleaning, often led to better gum measurements, though the evidence was rated limited. The strain used in ProDentim is not specified.
Lactobacillus paracasei
L. paracasei is a common probiotic species. The study the maker cites for teeth was carried out in rats, where it reduced cavity-causing bacteria. Human oral-health data are limited.
Bifidobacterium lactis BL-04
BL-04 is a trademarked, well-characterised strain. Its best-known human study looked at the common cold and found a modest effect on nasal inflammation. Research on its role in the mouth is scarce.
Inulin
Inulin is a fiber from chicory root that acts as food for beneficial bacteria. It can cause a little gas or bloating in sensitive people.
Streptococcus salivarius
S. salivarius is one of the first bacteria to settle in a healthy mouth. Specific strains such as K12 and M18 have been studied for fresh breath and plaque in small trials, mostly reported by the strain's developer. The label does not say which strain ProDentim uses.
Tricalcium phosphate and peppermint
Tricalcium phosphate supplies calcium and is often used as a tableting aid. Peppermint freshens breath and gives the tablet its cool taste.
Label versus sales page
The sales page mentions malic acid for whiter teeth, but malic acid does not appear on the current label, while S. salivarius appears on the label but not on the sales page. Formulas change, so the label on your own bottle is the final word.
